Thomas Boatwright
Born and raised in the Piedmont Triad, Thomas has spent his entire professional career in central North Carolina. Working as a full-time freelance artist since 2010, he has a portfolio history extending back over a decade. Preferring to work on digital platforms, Thomas has transitioned to a more mobile approach, allowing him to work in an environment that’s closer to drawing with traditional materials.
My freelance work is done all digitally. My set up for years was a PC running Photoshop CS2 and a small Cintiq tablet. I’ve said the best color training I had was working digital as I could try so much without worry over wasting paint. My digital set up now is using an iPad pro, Apple Pencil, then assembling or adjusting things in Photoshop.

As for personal and commission work, Thomas varies between watercolor, ink washes, and water soluble mediums. He tends to prefer woodless pencils for sketches, and Papermate felt tip pens for inking. That said, he’s always branching out and trying new products.
When asked about his primary sources of inspiration, Thomas noted the Blue Heron Arts with Henry Li, and Mary Doodles‘ YouTube channels.
